1. General information
The subject contributes: (1) To understand the nature of design and its problems, its historical context and the horizons of its disciplinary development. (2) To value the culture of the project as a factor of development and humanization of technologies. (3) To become familiar with the habits, methods, techniques and tools that support the practice of design in its various manifestations, particularly in the field of graphic design. (4) To propose solutions to design problems in different phases of a project and communicate them efficiently. (5) To know the professional design environment.
These approaches and objectives are aligned in a cross-cutting manner with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/): 4. Quality Education, 5. Gender Equality, 11. Sustainable Cities and Communities, 12. Responsible Production and Consumption
2. Learning results
The subject brings us closer to the world of design, combining the study of its theoretical principles, its relevance and social and cultural impact, with the experimentation of its fundamental procedures, methods and techniques. In order to pass this subject, the students shall demonstrate they has acquired the following results:
- Distinguish and apply layout formulas in: magazines, newspapers, catalogues, reports, books, and use professional software for their realization.
- Select, know and use the typographies on the proposals presented with accuracy and adequacy to each problem.
- Know both the typographic characters and their creators, their formal aspects and their circumstances of origin.
- Distinguish and apply knowledge in terms of reproduction and printing modes on the various printing techniques and their work processes.
- Master with perceptive speed the variety of weaves, selection of colours, ranges and pantones.
- Direct and control the whole process as final art.
3. Syllabus
Block I. Introduction to design.
- Nature and purpose.
- Graphic design: Historical aspects, current outlook and areas of application.
- Basic elements of design.
Block II. The process of creation and production in graphic design.
- Creation processes: methodology and problems.
- Computer tools for illustration, graphic treatment and edition.
- The graphic message and its structure.
- Introduction to typography and its composition.
- The Final Arts.
Block III. The application of the design.
- Identity and visual image. Brand. Logo.
- The identity manual.
- Advertising design. Posters. Brochures and leaflets. Catalogues.
- Editorial design.
Design, culture and artistic production.
4. Academic activities
The program offers the contents and tools necessary for the students to achieve the learning results foreseen in the subject through the following activities:
- Theoretical-practical exposition of the contents and demonstrations of the use of software with brief practical exercises.
- Carrying out of practical exercises of project type.
- Reading and commenting on recommended texts.
- Participation in seminars, conferences and visits to events, companies or institutions of special interest related to the contents of the subject.
- Development of a personal project.
The complexity of the proposed exercises will be adapted to the knowledge and progress detected in the students.
5. Assessment system
The achievement of learning and the acquisition of competencies will be evaluated during the term through the continuous assessment system.

Ordinary call [1st and 2nd]: Global Test.
The Global Test will consist of two parts: 1st_ Theoretical-practical test that will consist of the resolution and development of problems and cases, and; 2nd_ Delivery of practical exercises and portfolio. The assessment criteria to be considered will be the following: (1) Personal contribution, conceptual maturity, originality and creativity in the resolution of the exercises and critical capacity. (2) Correctness in the proposed solutions, methods employed and approaches given.

GLOBAL TEST
All students will have the right to take the global test in order to pass the subject or to improve the grade obtained. Students attending the exam must appear punctually on the day and at the time indicated in the exam´s notice, otherwise they will be considered as "No-shows".
SECOND CALL
The evaluation in second call, to which all students who have not passed the subject will be entitled, will be carried out by means of a global test that will take place in the period established in the academic calendar, to that effect, by the Governing Council.
